Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are a class of medications used historically to treat type 2 diabetes and, more recently, to manage weight loss. Already produced in the body, GLP-1 is a hormone secreted in your small intestine that helps regulate blood sugar, control appetite and aid in healthy digestion.
GLP-1 agonists work by mimicking the naturally occuring GLP-1 by increasing the release of insulin — the hormone that controls blood glucose by moving it into cells — and suppressing the release of glucagon, which releases glucose from the liver into the blood.
The medication works in three main ways for weight loss: metabolic optimization by controlling blood sugar, reducing food noise by acting on the GLP1 receptors in the brain, and by delaying gastric emptying therefore keeping you fuller, longer.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the GLP-1 hormone to help regulate appetite and blood sugar.
In a the STEP 1 study released in 2021, it was found that participants with overweight or obesity, on 2.5 mg of semaglutide once weekly who added lifestyle intervention showed clinically relevant reduction in body weight. Their mean loss was 15% and within our practice, on the program led by Dr. Blum, patients see an average loss of well into the 20 percentile.

Tirzepatide is a dual agonist that targets both GLP-1 and GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide) receptors, which can lead to more significant improvements in blood sugar control and weight loss.
In a study released in 2022, it was found that once weekly tirzepatide resulted in a 15% loss in weight on a dose of 5 mg, 19.5% loss at a dose of 10 mg and 20.9% loss at a dose of 15 mg.

GLP-1 treatments work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone in your body, which helps to regulate your appetite, slow down digestion, and promote a feeling of fullness. This leads to reduced food intake and supports weight loss.
Semaglutide renewals are $479 for five injections ($95.80 per injection). Once a patient is on a maintenance dose post-goal, a 15% discount is available with a contract.
Tirzepatide five week renewals are $479 for dosing up to 4 mg, $559 for dosing up to 6.8 mg and $579 for dosing up to 13.6 mg.

Ozempic is a brand name for the medication semaglutide. Essentially, they are the same drug, with Ozempic being a specific formulation of semaglutide used primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Both Ozempic and generic semaglutide work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone to regulate blood sugar levels and aid in weight loss. Your healthcare provider can help determine which formulation is best suited for your needs.
Some common side effects of GLP-1 treatments include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These are usually mild and tend to decrease over time. Your healthcare provider will discuss all potential side effects and how to manage them.

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are both medications used for weight management and diabetes treatment, but they work in slightly different ways. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the GLP-1 hormone to help regulate appetite and blood sugar. Tirzepatide, on the other hand, is a dual agonist that targets both GLP-1 and GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide) receptors, which can lead to more significant improvements in blood sugar control and weight loss. Your healthcare provider will help determine which treatment is best suited for your needs.
